You can deduct 1/3 of your rent as an office expense.

No you cannot. I don’t know what the answer above refers to, perhaps another US response?

In Canada, you cannot deduct costs for personal living, despite your situation. No more can I deduct the gas cost if I drove for a long distance. It’s just not a deductible expense (although you may have provincial renters grants of some sort, but that has no bearing on whether it was for work or not.)

No, as it is just a living expense.

If you are an employee of a company in the distant city, the apartment rental expenses at the distant city are personal living expenses, not deductible by you.

If you are in business (e.g., consulting) and your business requires you to travel and work in different cities for a short period of time, your business may deduct the apartment rental expenses similar to hotel rentals.
