I paid $60 for an application fee and the apartments want an administrative fee of $100 on top of the deposit. What is this fee used for? Is it the same for every apartment complex?

It is a shady, yet legal, way some places operate. Stay away from anyplace that charges more than a modest application fee. They need this to do your credit and criminal history check.

I am planning to study Japanese in Japan and I am planning to stay there for at least 6 months. I have been trying to look for apartments or spaces for rent where I can live during my stay. I will be with my boyfriend (who is a local). He has a house in Japan but we do not want to impose on his family. Any apartment that is affordable would be fine and we do not care if it is small or not. We just need a place to stay. I was hoping someone who can recommend me an inexpensive place. Thank you!

You can’t live in Japan for more than 90 days without a visa.

On apartment, Shinjuku is very expensive area. I don’t think you and your BF can afford it, given the fact that he still lives with his parents, meaning he can’t rent his own apartment right now, even a cheap one.

I’m a student at the University of Arizona and I’m living on campus this year. I’m sick of it, though, so I’m planning on living in an apartment off-campus starting in August. I’m wondering when I should seriously start looking into/applying for apartments? During the summer I’m going back home about 2 hours away so that makes things a little tricky. I’m also planning on moving in with my boyfriend, if that affects anything.

I was in the exact same place as you last year – I was a freshman at the UofA living on campus, planning on going to Phoenix for the summer.

We actually found the complex we wanted to live in around February. You HAVE to start looking early. Many places that rent mostly to students will start signing for fall in the spring, so it’s necessary to start looking for places sooner than later. Also, that way you can think about what you are looking for – most of the places really close to campus are more expensive and not as nice as the places that are father away, and these are the places that fill up the fastest as well.

All these luxury condos/apartments never start at 2nd or 3rd floor, always 20th+. Why? I imagine that the first would be the lobby, and couple for garage, one for amenities. What about the rest? Just curious.
Yes, I imagined it has a lot to do with the view. So these other floors have nothing in them?

Much of the value is in the view.

That is why they often put the high end luxury properties up that high in the air.

I do not want to pay the outrageous prices in NYC, yet I still would like a nice apartment that can easily access NYC (via mass transit– not driving). Where should I be looking for apartments that match this criteria? What mass transit opportunities do they have? Are there any websites that list them?

Assuming you mean Manhattan… Western Queens is very close via subway but not exactly "cheap"…. try: Rego Park, Kew Gardens and areas of Flushing. These are around $1100-1200/month and only 20-30 minutes away by subway. If you can afford a bit more, then you can stay somewhere nicer like Forest Hills or Astoria or even closer neighborhoods like Woodside, Long Island City and Sunnyside which can be as close as 15 minutes away via subway.

There’s also Brooklyn, but it’s getting quite expensive these days to stay in the more desirable areas.

Currently live in Queensland but next month I’ll be transferring to Melbourne University. I’m not worried about high prices, but how much exactly are the apartments in the central city of Melbourne? I know they’re expensive, especially the ones where the views are great, but if someone could tell me how much they are to buy, that would be great!

Depends so much on what exactly your looking for (how many bedrooms/bathrooms/car park/ location/views etc etc)

I’ve been helping an apartment broker guy advertise to people looking for apartments, and now he wants me to try to figure out a way to advertise to landlords who need someone to sell their apartments. I’m having trouble finding any information about this.

I will be a Graduate student attending Chaminade University in the Fall and was curious about the apartments available in this area around the university. Any suggestions? Ah the convenience of the Internet or the old fashion Newspaper – - – neither one works!
The best way to get a good deal is to pound the pavement. YES – - – go on line, find a cheap hotel room (there are a few) for a week, then using that as a base, get out and walk the neighborhood around Chaminade. It truly is a nice neighborhood, mostly flat. You walk, you spot a building you like, you ask around, is there a property manager? Seriously, the people who take my sage advice generally find better deals walking around – - – the old lady watering her lawn, "do you know any places for rent around here," be persistent, be friendly, turn on the charm.
Do contact Chaminade, there are various student societies and many might have leads as well. There are several community bulletin boards around the campus.

There are also ways to search for building managers on line as well, so if you find a few buildings you like you can search out the property managers or even individual unit owners who might have properties available.
Sadly enough Craigslist ahs become unreliabel and filled with dangerous crack pots.
